The house is located on a corner site atop a hill, approximately a 15-minute walk north from the coastline of Hiroshima Bay. To the south, it overlooks the Seto Inland Sea and Miyajima, while to the north, it is embraced by a lush wooded landscape, offering a მშვიდ and tranquil living environment.
The existing two-storey wooden house, now 34 years old, was found to be in remarkably good condition for its age. Its solid construction meant that it could have been inhabited without major intervention. The client acquired the property as its third owner, inheriting a home that had been carefully maintained over time, and chose to continue living within its legacy.
The house is now home to a family of three. While respecting each individual’s lifestyle and interests, the design introduces a spatial composition that gently connects each room. Materials such as shoji screens and wallpaper softly receive natural light, bringing subtle variations into the interior. Meanwhile, the newly articulated spaces beneath the existing roof structure create moments of quiet openness, offering a sense of spatial generosity to everyday life.
Rather than altering the structure or making extensive interventions, the project demonstrates how thoughtful material selection and careful construction can shape a living environment attuned to the inhabitants’ way of life.
Over time, the house will continue to evolve, growing together with its residents.
