Mod 3 was constructed in modules in a warehouse in Lawrence, Kansas and then shipped to the historic Strawberry Hill neighborhood of Kansas City, Kansas. It sits on top of a pronounced hill and has an expansive view of the Kansas City, Missouri skyline.
The six modules create an efficient 1,200 square-foot, two-bedroom house. The first two modules that face the street hold the living room and deck. The next two modules support the wet spaces with a galley kitchen facing one exterior wall and the bathroom, laundry and a mechanical space facing the other. The two modules at the back create the bedrooms, one made flexible with a moving storage wall. The windows were located throughout to promote cross ventilation and control solar penetration. To make the small floor plan feel more generous we used surface mounted sliding doors rather than swing doors which would consume a large part of the room to clear for their swing. The exterior is clad with a rainscreen using a Vaproshield barrier and douglas fir wood strips.
