Fusing athletics, recreation, fitness, mental health, educational resources and more in one space, the McCaffery-Wagman Tennis and Wellness Center marks a pivotal moment for Skidmore College as it deepens its commitment to the holistic student experience.
Built alongside Skidmore’s existing Williamson Sports Center, the building brings to life a vision for an athletics and recreation quad first shaped through our earlier master planning work with the college.
The final building’s massing is divided into two distinct components: a shed-like tennis center and a north-facing headhouse. The headhouse is further split into two volumes organized around a multi-story entrance lobby.
The cube-shaped pavilion houses two floors of fitness space and a medical center, while the triangular volume connects to the surrounding outdoor tennis complex and includes athletic support, multiuse, wellness and counseling spaces.
The Tennis and Wellness Center is inherently multi-dimensional, offering numerous resources to the campus community, including:
An NCAA tennis complex featuring eight lighted outdoor tennis courts and four indoor courts that provide key spaces for Skidmore’s nationally ranked men’s and women’s tennis teams to train and compete.
A two-story fitness and recreation space with leading-edge cardio and weight training areas along with dedicated spaces for diverse wellness programming, including yoga, meditation, spring classes and martial arts.
The center unites Skidmore’s Health Services, Counseling Center and Department of Health Promotion to offer students an integrated care model to support their health and well-being. Previously, these departments were located in different locations across campus.
Immediately surrounding the building is an outdoor green space defined by the fitness pavilion and the adjacent Dance Center on campus. This space serves as the focal point for the entire athletics precinct while also helping admit daylight into the building and providing space for outdoor activities and performances.
