With the intent to downsize from
their previous residence, the owners purchased this modest home within an
established community on Longboat Key. The original 1970s design featured a
three-story home as a warren of small dark rooms, including a 160 square foot kitchen
that was undersized, enclosed and unresponsive to the needs of the owners. They teamed with the architect for a thorough redesign that would reflect their
taste of clean, simple lines filled with open space and a connection to the
outdoors.
The challenge for the architect was
to open and enlarge the kitchen without imposing into other rooms, while still
keeping the home within the existing footprint. The solution was to relocate
the kitchen to become the home’s focal point and create an inviting and open
floor plan through the removal of several walls.
The resulting redesign and owner/architect
collaboration has opened the kitchen with sliding, pocketing doors and wider
terraces to capture the view of the bayou and pool, creating a breezy sense of
indoor-outdoor living. The kitchen was doubled in size and features stainless
steel, bamboo flooring, and composite countertops. The updated floor plan provides a new sense
of flow and establishes open areas onto terraces, the Dining Room and Living
Room for the owners’ evening entertaining.
The new, inviting kitchen features
numerous green aspects. Energy efficient windows and
sliding glass doors were installed and natural cross-ventilation minimizes
air-conditioning use. The home uses
energy efficient sealed combustion water heaters and Energy Star
appliances. The remodel also uses
rapidly renewable resources, such as bamboo flooring, and low VOC paints,
sealants and finishes.
The result is a kitchen renovation
that captures the lifestyle of the owners through clarity of form, open spaces
and elegant compositions.
