Upon its completion in 1986, the LG Corporation Headquarters became the first large-scale, modern workplace in South Korea, and a forerunner for future office developments in Seoul. Decades later, the original architects, SOM, returned to this classic postmodern building, leading a comprehensive renovation of the building’s base and plaza. The goal was to transform the headquarters into a flexible, wellness-focused campus suited to the needs of LG’s next generation of employees.
The team’s intervention creates a greater sense of openness throughout the headquarters. By carefully studying the original design, the team identified opportunities to simplify the structural lattice and streamline wall and ceiling finishes—preserving the integrity of the original structural grid, while modernizing its expression. By opening up sightlines, the renovation transforms the common areas, the atrium, and lower levels into a welcoming, multifunctional campus heart centered on employee health and wellness. It merges old and new, accentuating the principles of the original design by introducing new plantings, more natural light, and clearer connections between floors and to the outdoors.
The renovation’s most dramatic enhancement is a large opening connecting the first and lower levels with a sculptural, multi-directional staircase. The staircase improves circulation, brings inside daylight, and introduces new seating, landscaping, and warm finishes that enhance the interior environment. It is composed of stacked wooden louvers, an aesthetic that is carried into finishes throughout the lower level.
Surrounding the central hub, existing sunken gardens have been reimagined as a private outdoor space with cascading greenery, framed by ultra-transparent glass that maximizes light and outdoor views. New escalators surrounding the central grand staircase enhance interior circulation, while a refreshed public plaza—complete with new paving, landscaping, fountains, and rock gardens—extends the workplace experience outwards, making the complex more accessible and inviting for both staff and the wider community.
