The renovated Lexington City Center transforms the old Windstream building at North State Street and West Second Street into an open, accessible civic hub. Designed as a modern customer service center, it allows residents to easily access various city utility services from a single, centralized location.
Sustainability and resilience guided the design. By preserving the existing concrete frame, the project reduces embodied carbon while maintaining the building’s urban presence. Exterior improvements boost energy efficiency and comfort, while carefully scaled street-level additions enhance the pedestrian experience and integrate the building with nearby downtown storefronts. A new entry canopy extends outward, creating a civic gesture that signals openness and welcomes visitors.
The core design strategy emphasizes clarity, daylight, and connection. Interior spaces are opened up to maximize natural light and improve visual connectivity, creating a bright, inviting atmosphere that replaces the traditional municipal office feel with a more approachable civic space.
Flexibility and community engagement are key to the transformation. Adaptable spaces throughout support teamwork, collaboration, and public gatherings, making the center both a workplace for city staff and a destination for civic activity.
Built for adaptability and long-term value, Lexington City Center shows how thoughtful adaptive reuse can breathe new life into an existing structure while strengthening links between city services and the community. It replaces barriers with accessibility, turning a former office building into a vibrant, transparent destination that encourages civic engagement and supports daily public life.
