This project on a former industrial estate consists of apartments, shops and a hotel, and 75% of it is constructed out of timber – an increasingly popular choice in France.
The master plan divides the 13,000 m² area into two sections: The ten-story hotel tower enhances the bustling Place des Halles to the east; the two-story residential buildings lie on the quieter west side. All buildings are connected by a common, grassy ground level which houses retail spaces and public facilities. The hotel is built out of three-dimensional, prefabricated timber modules, the floors and walls of the residential buildings are made of prefabricated timber elements. This construction not only has a positive effect on the energy use and the indoor climate, but also reduces construction time and therefore costs. In the hotel lobby, on the facades, ceilings and balconies, wood creates a pleasant visual ambience and feeling of coziness. The residential district of La Cartoucherie shows that wood is an excellent building material, not only because of its ecologically sustainable qualities and its positive effect on the quality of living but also due to its affordability and constructional properties in large-scale, urban buildings.
