Next to Sundbyberg’s new city park ‘Kvarnkullen’, Marge Arkitekter is designing a new preschool on behalf of Sundbyberg Municipality. The preschool, which will accommodate 150 children, has been designed to meet the requirements of the Swedish Green Building Council’s sustainable building certification. After school, in the evenings and at weekends, local residents will have access to the playground.
The well-defined, straight school building abuts the street, reinforcing its urban character. On the park side, the scale of the building volume is broken down to create a varied outdoor environment with plenty of space for the preschool children to play in.
The varied colour scheme, both inside and out, facilitates the children’s understanding of space and context and makes it easier for them to find their way. Generous exterior walkways on the second floor provide the opportunity for play, educational activities and rest, whatever the weather. The façade is painted in pink and earthy tones – a beautiful backdrop to the greenery of the park.
