'Pimp your school': kids and neighbors participate in the process. Improvements to the facade and entrance hall of the Kraemerschool resulted in a recognizable identity of the school in the neighbourhood. In the Netherlands’ school system, there are no expensive private schools or charter schools. Schools are often one of the few places that are truly public and trusted. In schools, the neighborhood meets. The school has come to replace the public square. For an Amsterdam housing corporation and a group of 35 primary schools, One Architecture is developing a strategy for school- and neighborhood renewal by using this unique position. In three pilots, the network of parents, cousins and neighbors is activated by organizing programs and events through the school. Temporary improvements are realized. Subsequently, new schools are designed and developed such that they can truly function in an urban way. In this process, many hurdles have to be overcome, such as financing systems, bureaucracies and building codes. With the lessons learned from the pilots, a citywide roll-out is expected. The Dr.H. Kraemerschool has some difficilties which are symptomatic for the whole bandwidth of schools within this project. According to these problems One Architecture created a repetitive concept which can be used, extended and personalized for each school. Within a first step of renewal OA concentrates on the main entrance of the school.
