The design for this private home on the shore of Lake Ontario, explores a minimalist architectural expression and considers many stages of life. A focus on using robust local materials has been carried throughout the design for both the structure and finishes and includes both Ontario granite and timber. A meaningful connection to the surrounding natural features is achieved through a choreography of site lines and circulation paths, culminating in a project rooted to the regenerative landscaping and plantings while always acknowledging its special relationship with the lake.
Of great importance to the client, was to design with their extensive art collection in mind – the display of each piece has been carefully considered, from location to lighting. The 1-storey house is entirely barrier-free, wheelchair accessible, and curb-less, with separate guest quarters should caregiving be required in the future. The design is a small-scale representation of the principles we champion in all projects – applying unique design solutions that are sensitive, generous, and regenerative.
