Located in a loft-like1920s storefront space located in Venice, California, the Hourglass cosmetics store is veiled in a wall of glass tubes. The tubes curve from the storefront into the store, layered over a surface of acid etched mirror. Light from the storefront and new skylights filters into the store through the veil of glass. The cosmetics collection is displayed on an interwoven, zigzagging plinth made in black Corian and Calacatta marble. The surfaces of the plinth are slightly sloped to make the collection visible upon entrance. A suspended custom LED light fixture above mirrors the shape of the counter. The existing wood roof structure remains exposed and the brick walls are painted white, framing the new interventions. A mirrored cosmetic counter and backlit graphics line the remaining walls. A new double height steel and glass storefront allows views through the vail of glass tubes deep into the store.
