Located just south of Asheville, North Carolina, the Hope Women’s Cancer Center renovation transforms a 25,500-SF outpatient oncology facility into a bright, calming environment aligned with contemporary healing standards. The interiors approach focused on “rolling out the red carpet” for patients by creating a dignified, patient-centered experience while improving privacy and supporting staff wellness and efficiency.
A primary goal was to replace dark, dated finishes and corridor motifs with a timeless aesthetic that appeals to adult female patients and reflects local craftsman influence. The refreshed design re-centers the environment on calmness, warmth, and clarity: a bright, fresh palette replaces heavy brown tones, refined material continuity brings cohesion, and softened curves at clinical touchpoints—at the nurse station, infusion areas, and in flooring patterns—create a gentler sense of flow.
Lighting was central to the transformation. Poor, inconsistent illumination was replaced with energy-efficient LED strategies that deliver consistent, layered light for improved visual comfort, orientation, and wayfinding. Integrated lighting reinforces key architectural features, including arched ceilings, to create a steady rhythm through circulation. Existing skylights were retained and complemented by upgraded electric lighting, balancing daylight with a more consistent, welcoming glow and reducing harsh contrast across patient areas.
The renovation updated patient care areas in a single coordinated effort while the center remained operational. Privacy and ease were prioritized where patients and families feel them most: scheduling areas were streamlined with added stations and increased privacy to support confidential conversations and reduce stress at check-in, while blood draw capacity was improved with additional stations and enhanced privacy to reduce waiting and exposure. Infusion space was expanded to meet demand and provide a more supportive experience during longer visits.
Staff support was a core driver, with a focus on wellness and “speed of care.” Workflow improvements in high-volume areas help reduce bottlenecks and friction in daily operations, while upgraded lighting and brighter finishes improve working conditions, reduce fatigue, and reinforce a professional, patient-centered image. Dedicated wellness enhancements include a relocated and renovated break room for meaningful respite, along with sit-stand desks along exam room corridors to support ergonomic flexibility and quick charting.
Throughout the facility, the design highlights existing architectural character and anchors the experience with familiar elements, including the fireplace as a welcoming focal point. Views to the surrounding wooded hillsides provide a quiet connection to nature, reinforcing a calmer experience for patients, families, and staff. Together, lighting, softened forms, improved privacy, and smoother flow create a composed environment designed to reduce anxiety and support healing.
