Hongkong Post Building is the new headquarters for the city's postal department, embodying a visionary design of functionality, aesthetics and sustainability. The building comprises a public section including a post office and a postal gallery, and a staff section including working, operation and training spaces.
The architecture represents a new image for the Hongkong Post in the 21st Century. It is a model of an open and inviting civic building, dedicated to enhance the well-being of its users while serving as a nexus connecting the institute with the community it serves.
For the creation of this 9-storey civic structure, an innovative design began on urban level. The design team envisioned transformative changes by introducing the concept of a landscaped plaza in front of the building, serving as a serene foyer and green pedestrian pathway amidst the surrounding industrial cityscape, providing a refreshing respite and elevating the wellness of visitors and staff. This plaza encourages public movement across the site, between the bustling Kowloon East CBD and the progressive Kai Tak Development, enhancing connectivity among districts.
Through meticulous tectonic treatments, the architecture achieves a dynamic and visually captivating presence by breaking down the building mass into distinct components and crafting voids as balconies and terraces. Materials and textures play a crucial role, with facades showcasing a rich palette that includes expanses of smooth glass, textured glass fibre reinforced concrete panels, embossed precast fair-faced concrete panels, and recessed modular metal façade. The articulation of form and material enlivens the building's presence and creates a harmonious dialogue with the surrounding industrial context.
To break away from the repetitive rectangular city grid prevalent in this industrial zone, a distinctive coloured feature wall at 1st floor gallery was incorporated, seamlessly extending the gallery to the street through the expansive glass wall, which brings vibrancy and visual interest to the otherwise monotonous streetscape, injecting a new sense of vitality, and warmly invites the public to explore it diverse exhibits.
At building scale, the design deliberately emphasizes on seamless visual and physical connections, prioritizes the wellness of users and sustainable workspaces by creating an inviting spatial environment, incorporating of lush greenery and outdoor breakout spaces that bridges inside and outside, integrating natural light and bringing outdoor views to the interior. Various circulation spaces and public accessible areas are flooded with sunlight, reducing the need for artificial lighting.
Landscaped terraces and a central courtyard are integrated at various levels, creating an undisturbed connection that allows staff to relish the serene green garden views from their working spaces. These tranquil spaces infused the working areas with sense of openness, natural light, and welcoming ambiance not only offer a peaceful environment but also functions as a gathering hub, that seamlessly extend into the interior through glass walls, blurring boundaries, fostering positive interactions and nurturing a sense of community among staff members.
