Set within Virginia’s 1,184-acre Wilton Farm along the James River, the Henrico County Center for Environmental Studies and Sustainability (CESS) reimagines what a public school can be. Designed as a Living Building Challenge project, the 11,500 SF facility is envisioned as the world’s first regenerative K–12 public school - featuring the architecture itself as a central part of the curriculum.
Organized around a contemporary interpretation of the regional dogtrot, the building frames views to forests, wetlands, and Whale Lake while supporting flexible learning spaces for students across biology, ecology, and geospatial sciences. Rooftop solar systems generate more than 105% of annual energy demand, while on-site rainwater capture and treatment dramatically reduces potable water use.
More than a high-performance building, CESS functions as a living laboratory where students engage directly with the systems that sustain life—offering a replicable model for climate-positive public education rooted in place, stewardship, and long-term resilience.
