Set within the natural contours of Northwest Arkansas, the Heartland Whole Health Institute is a purpose-built environment designed to reflect and advance a transformative vision of health care. Rooted in the principles of whole health, the building embodies a commitment to treating the full spectrum of human well-being—physical, mental, emotional, and social—through spaces that foster connection, reflection, and healing.
The three-story, 85,000-square-foot facility is situated on a forested campus adjacent to the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art and its curving form embraces the terrain. Locally sourced stone and faceted bronze fins evoke permanence and movement—grounding the Institute in regional identity while suggesting the dynamic nature of health and transformation.
Visitors enter through a breezeway that opens to a meadow and wooded trails beyond, signaling the Institute’s integration with nature. Inside, natural materials create a warm and tactile environment. In the main lobby, a sculptural wood ceiling and suspended stairs lead to a skylit meditation room that offers a moment of stillness and orientation, reflecting the Institute’s belief that wellness begins with awareness.
The building’s layout supports collaboration and education. Public areas on the ground floor include event spaces, a café, and an art gallery featuring exhibitions that explore the relationship between creativity and health. Upper levels house flexible offices designed to encourage interdisciplinary work and shared learning. Glass partitions and acoustical panels balance transparency with privacy, while expansive windows offer views of the surrounding forest—reinforcing the connection between environment and well-being.
Ultimately, the Heartland Whole Health Institute is a physical expression of a new paradigm—through architecture, landscape, and programming, the Institute invites visitors, staff, and partners to imagine what health care can become when it is rooted in empathy, equity, and whole-person understanding.
