A boutique visual communication company for the entertainment industry, Gravillis Inc. had outgrown the 750-square-foot studio where it established its business and expanded into a mid-century office space 10 times larger. The partners turned to SmithGroup to craft an interior that would retain the intimate, creative energy and character of their work and the media they inhabit, while enhancing their work flow with amenities to better support their work.
The new space is not only flexible and functional, but matches the firm’s visually stimulating identity. At the office’s center, glass walls and an open library create a crossroads between the design studio and the project manager’s suite. The entire office is energized by strong accent colors, bold textures, and a large hand-painted mural punctuated by the firm’s philosophies “Art will continue” and “Made for Designers”. The design studio opens to an exterior terrace which provides opportunities to gather as a team, host clients and events, and continues a long tradition in Southern California architecture of removing barriers between indoors and out. Arcade games, a ping pong table and use of interesting materials reflect a culture of playfulness. Together, this layering of colors, ideas, textures and materials build on Gravillis’ brand identity and create a lively space to inspire creativity.
