The Owners of this newly built single-family residence wished to create a destination space in their house where they could relax by a fire, gaze out at a wooded landscape, and be surrounded by some of their personal treasures. The room was also to double as their primary media space.
Materials such as sapele (ribbon mahogany) wall and ceiling panels, ipe plank flooring, limestone, and plaster were carefully selected to create a warm and intimate environment that glows from the soft, indirect light within the room as well as the natural light that enters from both ends of the space.
In order to avoid having the black void of a TV screen dominate the wall, a composition of interlocking volumes was created. These include a mahogany enclosure and cover panel for the TV, which slides into a plaster-clad box which is used to display personal art objects. Both rest on a limestone-clad element, which becomes the fireplace hearth and also houses the owner’s AV equipment.
