[ A Cabin House for Camping at Home in Unyang-dong ]

The Cabin House in Unyang-dong is a home designed for a couple who enjoy camping as a hobby and their three sons. The owners wished to build a single-family house for their five-member family, regardless of the surrounding environment. Using the relatively spacious plot, the house was designed to make the most of the natural surroundings, with the large yard being used as an outdoor activity space. The key goal of the project was to enhance the connection between the interior and exterior of the house.

The Cabin House consists of a main building and two separate units, placed at each end of the plot and connected by a corridor and wall. This arrangement ensures privacy for the yard. A large sliding door is installed on the partition wall connecting the two separate units, allowing for controlled openness while also making it possible for a camper to enter the yard. This central yard encourages the family to actively use the outdoor space, and when looking from inside the house, it blocks the surrounding cluttered landscape, creating a more stable and peaceful atmosphere.

A notable feature inside the house is the common space, which is organized into three levels. The concept of a skip-floor design is applied, where the living room is partially raised, creating visual and functional connections with the kitchen and dining area on the first floor, and with the study area, or “Forest of Wisdom,” on the second floor. This central space fosters a sense of openness and communication, offering a rich spatial experience that adds enjoyment to daily life.

The Cabin House was designed to naturally balance the daily life of a detached house with the restful experience of a vacation home. In the yard, children can run and play, while inside the cabin, friends and neighbors can enjoy pleasant gatherings. On rainy days, the corridor and eaves protect from the rain, creating a subtle landscape with the sound of raindrops. In South Korea, where the four seasons are distinct, the Cabin House will become a memorable place, offering various ways for the family to enjoy each season like a small vacation spot.
