Generator Urban Design Hostels sets itself apart as the only design hostel with multiple locations. Each hostel is location specific, each set in repurposed existing architecture. The Generator brand values sustainability and ingenuity, reinventing underused buildings with art installations, fun furnishings, lighting, graphics and wall coverings that create dynamic social spaces for visiting travelers and urban natives alike.
Generator Barcelona, its flagship location, marks the revitalization of the Generator brand, as well as the refurbishment of a 73,000 sq.ft.1960’s office building that was once the headquarters of the Spanish National Gas company. The combined hotel and hostel boasts 720 beds housed in both hostel style shared rooms and private luxury hotel suites. The simple yet functional rooms encourage mingling in the hostel’s shared spaces.
The design privileges public spaces and integrates custom elements common to Generator’s fluid aesthetic, such as signature ‘G’ sculptures and a bold colour palette. The culture and history of the Spanish city sparks the party atmosphere within the hostel, which pays homage to Barcelona’s Festa Major de Gràcia. The hotel acknowledges Barcelona’s nautical history, recreating a ship’s hull in the lobby. Contributions by local artisans give the project a localized look and feel, including Tres Tintas wallpaper, Wouff! pillows and a lighting installation by artist Julie Plottier. Trinkets from the local Ecantz Market lend the games room a sense of fun and whimsy.
Open since May 2013, Generator Barcelona has already been the focus of publications worldwide. DesignAgency has been asked to speak about the project at large-scale events in other cities such as IDS West in Vancouver. With almost consistently solid bookings, Barcelona is a reflection of the growing success of the Generator brand – that will launch new design-forward locations in Venice, Berlin, London and Paris in the coming months.
