Of profound historical significance, the Fanshan Alunite Mine in Lujiang ceased operations in 2001, leaving behind a landscape of decaying factories, crystallization ponds, and a damaged ecosystem. Confronting this legacy, the project adopted a core strategy of “Conservation-Activation-Insertion-Regeneration” to achieve a profound metamorphosis.
Conservation forms the foundational layer. The design treats the industrial remnants with archaeological rigor, meticulously preserving the terraced landforms, circular pit relics, original timber trusses, and other industrial traces. These elements form a striking, authentic base upon which new life is built.
Activation reimagines the spatial experience through a compelling narrative. Using “crystals” as a unifying theme, an elevated black boardwalk weaves through the site, minimizing disturbance while connecting its fragments. A series of installations and furniture—crafted from translucent materials like fiberglass and acrylic—are strategically placed. These elements transform a walk through the site into an immersive, three-dimensional poem about light, minerals, and time.
Insertion introduces new programs to infuse contemporary vitality. Sensitively integrated functions include themed exhibitions, an outdoor theater, and retail. The most iconic intervention is the "Pit Café," where a suitably scaled circular pit is transformed into a unique social vessel. Visitors descend into the earth, sipping coffee beneath translucent lighting, surrounded by weathered pit walls. This space marvelously blends industrial history with modern life, completing the relic’s transition from a distant "object" to an engaging "subject."
Ultimately, this strategy achieves holistic Regeneration. The site is no longer an isolated relic but a vibrant cultural landmark combining exhibition, leisure, and education. Through these deliberate interventions, the industrial site has been reborn as a sustainable and highly attractive whole, where history, restored ecology, and contemporary culture coexist.
