Form
Integrated within Amsterdam Central Station, a national monument designed by Pierre Cuypers, the new Eurostar UK Terminal weaves historic layers into the spatial experience. The interior connects past and future, with curved ceilings referencing the original barrel vaults while contemporary materials and detailing align with the Eurostar brand. Terrazzo floors with subtle green tones guide travelers through the space, forming a visual bridge between the station’s historical character and a contemporary aesthetic. Carefully designed lighting accentuates existing brickwork and vaulted ceilings, giving new life to the monument.
Function
Housed in the former Amstelpassage, one of the station’s five north–south tunnels, the terminal is up to four times the size of the previous UK terminal and functions as a Schengen external border with full passport and baggage control. A clear and intuitive circulation strategy guides travelers from the city entrance through security and border checks towards the waiting area and onward to the platforms. Continuous ceiling surfaces reinforce orientation along the main axis, while vertical circulation via the historic Cuypers building improves wayfinding and passenger flow.
Impact
The project demonstrates how contemporary infrastructure can operate efficiently within a complex heritage context. Rather than building anew, the design builds upon the existing structure of Amsterdam Central Station, retaining major elements and technical systems to reduce material waste and preserve embodied carbon. Inclusive design measures, including tactile guidance paths, clear visual cues, quiet waiting areas, and layouts compliant with TSI PRM regulations, ensure an accessible and comfortable experience for all travelers. Modular construction and circular material strategies, including biobased terrazzo flooring with a negative CO₂ footprint, support long-term flexibility and environmental performance.
