This was a unique and deeply personal project for us. The Owners initially asked for our help developing architectural modifications to accommodate the special needs of their infant daughter, who faced physical and cognitive challenges due to an anomalous brain development. Our work began with research into her condition, to better understand how she may experience the world now and continue to learn new skills and assimilate new experiences. The research led us to consider how every aspect of the spaces we design could both respond to her specific needs as well as aid in her cognitive development. At the same time, this was a full “gut” renovation which needed to integrate the needs of her neuro-typical siblings and parents too, to feel like the warm and inclusive home which they all deserve.
We worked collaboratively with the talented Andrew Fethes to investigate ideas of scale, procession through space, natural light, color “coding”, contrast, texture, and how one engages with all of their senses to experience and navigate spaces, in order to create a safe and uplifting environment for the family and their therapeutic aides. Ultimately these concepts permeated the design and interior detailing of the entire house holistically, ensuring a consistent and sensitively detailed result.
