Set amidst the compact fabric of an affordable housing complex in Panchkula, this community centre reimagines how architecture can foster belonging within constraints. Designed on a tight site, it transforms limitations into opportunities, celebrating “more in less” through levels, voids, and visual continuity. The double-height grand entry and soaring multipurpose hall offer a feeling of expansiveness beyond physical size. Material choices like textured stone, brick tones, and warm wood finishes reflect the site’s natural character. The centre becomes more than a building—it becomes a nurturing space for interaction, memory, and shared identity.
Innovation lies in how vertical layering creates expansiveness despite the compact site. Functions are stacked smartly, and double-height volumes like the multipurpose hall evoke openness and emotional connection. Visual slits and vertical shifts not only bring in natural light but also frame views of the sky and surroundings—making interiors feel larger, lighter, and linked to nature. Material simplicity meets experiential richness here; affordable finishes like bricks, textured claddings, and warm laminates offer tactile and emotional depth without extravagance. Through clever level play and sensory storytelling, the project transforms a modest footprint into an expansive emotional landscape.
Architecture, at its truest, is not the creation of spaces—but of memories. The carved stone wall stands as a silent storyteller, whispering tales of the land’s original spirit—the trees that once swayed here, the birds that once sang. In a world driven by rapid change, this textured surface becomes an act of remembrance, a tactile bridge between yesterday and today.
It anchors the community in a shared lineage, where even the walls breathe with the memory of nature. Here, belonging is not just a feeling; it is built, etched into every stone, woven into every gathering, carried forward with every passing moment.
Every space in the project is functional, flexible, and emotionally resonant. Circulation is compact yet intuitive, allowing seamless flow between activity zones, terraces, and indoor recreation spaces. The interiors respectfully respond to the memory of the site—incorporating a feature stone wall etched with trees and birds to evoke the area’s natural heritage. Brick and muted palettes ground the building in its place while offering warmth and authenticity. Multipurpose areas adapt easily to various needs—from kids’ zones to community gatherings—ensuring that the centre remains dynamic and relevant as the users' needs evolve over time.
Sustainability is embedded through passive design strategies: slits and ventilated fenestrations promote airflow and daylighting, while local, low-impact materials minimize environmental footprint. Rather than relying on expensive luxury finishes, the design finds richness in tactile materials—claddings, bricks, and wood-tones—that offer sophistication without cost-heavy excess. The detailing focuses on emotional resonance rather than extravagance, making spaces feel dignified, warm, and inclusive. This approach supports not just environmental responsibility but also socio-cultural identity, creating a community centre that embodies togetherness, affordability, and aspiration—a space that belongs truly to its people.
