At the heart of the Triangle d’or, the refurbishment of the buildings located 11-15 rue François Ier and 30-32 avenue Montaigne in the 8th Parisian district, aims to highlight the Christian Dior heritage. His history, creativity and brand are intimately linked with this place where everything began. In the middle of the 20th century, all the Christian Dior creations have been conceived and exhibited in the 30 Montaigne private mansion. To preserve this artist’s memory, to reveal the virtuosity of the creators continuing its work nowadays, and to celebrate the internationally renowned Dior brand, a main refurbishment and extension project has been directed by Barthélémy Griño Architects. The diversity of the program echoes the Christian Dior savoir-faire, made of creation, culture and art of living: Haute couture and high jewelry workshops, offices, global store, suite and exhibition gallery. Nature takes a main place in the project thanks to the central garden and jardin d’hiver. Christian Dior’s passion for botany and plants iconicity in his brand are perceptible. The global store is organized around these outside and green areas. The Dior 30 Montaigne project reflects the brand identity, halfway between historical heritage and contemporary language.
Barthélémy Griño has realized some structuring and spectacular interventions to metamorphose this emblematic address:
- The various inappropriate extensions created in the past are removed and all the vertical circulations are modified to generate a fluent progression through the programmatic areas.
- In the exhibition gallery, the monumental and iconic staircase Colorama is a Barthélémy Griño exclusive design.
- A second basement is created to host the technical premises.
- The 11 rue François Ier access is transformed by the creation of an outstanding jardin d’hiver. Conceived by Barthélémy Griño Architects and T/E/S/S atelier d’ingénierie, specializing in structure, the Dior 30 montaigne jardin d’hiver is a contemporary extension with remarkable characteristics. It is composed by 24 glazed panels, the biggest ones measuring 2m45 x 8m70 and made in France for the very first time. The structure, consisting of 7,50 meters-long clear laminated glass beams, is a main innovation, previously unseen. The jardin d’hiver conception and production are a technical achievement. The whole glazed volume sits on a titanium finished base. A wrought iron gate with extraordinary dimensions takes place in front of the entrance. The project gets back the typically Parisian buildings appearance by façades and roofing restorations.
In the frame of its intervention, Barthélémy Griño has transformed the haute couture and high jewelry workshops interior architecture too. The haute couture workshops are conceived as huge laboratories full of natural light. The architectural language is very minimalist and efficient, and so is the sewing desks design. The limited colour palette gives a main place to white. Grey floorings and black metallic details bring a rhythm in the global composition. High-quality materials become symptomatic of a discreet and rigorous architecture. The functional aspect of this place dedicated to creation has been conceived deliberately in contrast with the luxuriant haute couture pieces which come to light here. These areas have been imagined in close collaboration with Christian Dior Haute Couture top management to offer the best comfort and technology to their team. As for the high jewellery workshop, it develops a warmer language using some fine and natural materials, selected for their durability and quality. Parquet floor, desks and console tables are made of oak. For the first time, the whole jewellery process unfolds in a unique place. The jewellers craft and meticulousness are part of this unique address.
