We conceived this small garden pavilion as a light-filled and quietly expressive structure that does more than simply store tools. Tucked against an existing masonry wall and nestled beneath a mature tree canopy, the 60-square-foot gardening shed becomes both a functional workspace and a moment of retreat within an urban backyard.
We chose a simple two by four framing wrapped in translucent polycarbonate panels to allow daylight to softly permeate the interior while maintaining privacy and protection from the elements. The gently sloped roof heightens the sense of space, creating the perception of a taller interior volume despite the compact footprint. Inside, exposed plywood shelving and integrated work surfaces support everyday gardening activities while reinforcing an honest, hands-on material language.
At night, the pavilion is intended to glow subtly like a lantern, casting warm, diffuse light into the garden and animating the surrounding brick wall and landscape. Rather than competing with its context, we designed the structure as a quiet presence—responsive to light, shadow, and season—transforming a modest garden shed into an atmospheric and carefully crafted object in the landscape.
