The Connecticut Humane Society needed to replace its outdated Westport facility with a modern campus that could address growing community needs. After serving Fairfield County since the 1950s, the organization sought a location with room to expand its mission beyond traditional shelter services – providing affordable veterinary care, behavioral support, community outreach, and foster coordination. The 13,971 SF facility on an 18-acre Wilton site needed to reflect CHS’s values of compassion and professionalism while creating a welcoming environment for animals and their families.
The design responds to the wooded hillside setting with warm, natural materials that break down the building’s scale and create an inviting presence. A tall, transparent entry atrium filled with natural daylight establishes an open, welcoming atmosphere. The building’s exterior materials – featuring subtle, warm tones and natural variation – blend with the surrounding landscape while maintaining a modern aesthetic. Interior spaces are thoughtfully organized with separate entrances for privacy during difficult moments, sound-insulated kennels with natural light, and dedicated wellness areas for staff.
The result is a facility designed for both animal welfare and human dignity. Thoughtful details – from solar tube skylights in cat rooms to private exam spaces for families facing pet surrender or end-of-life decisions – demonstrate how compassionate design supports CHS’s expanded mission of keeping pets in homes and providing accessible care throughout Fairfield County.
