In partnership with Charlotte Preparatory School, Little designed a new 24,000-square-foot, two-story Lower School that transforms a moment of loss into an opportunity for renewal. Following the destruction of the previous facility in a three-alarm fire, the new building reimagines learning environments to inspire students and set Charlotte Prep apart.
At the heart of the new Lower School are eleven 950-square-foot classrooms designed for K–4 learning. These spacious, flexible environments provide room for exploration, creativity, and differentiated instruction, ensuring students have the space they need to thrive academically and socially.
Beyond the classroom walls, the design continues to foster connection and innovation through a central collaboration space. Designed to encourage cross-disciplinary learning and innovative teaching approaches, it provides a space for students and teachers to share ideas, experiment, and collaborate, supporting a forward-thinking curriculum that prepares learners for the future.
The expansive entrance foyer provides a bright, open setting that warmly welcomes students and visitors. Connected to this space, the new dining hall features a larger footprint and flexible layout, accommodating everything from daily meals to school-wide gatherings.
Designed with both leadership and care in mind, the new Lower School includes dedicated offices for the Head and assistant, along with welcoming spaces for the counselor and learning support specialist. These thoughtfully integrated areas ensure that guidance, support, and connection are always accessible to students and families.
More than a replacement for the former building, the new Lower School reimagines the student experience. Rooted in collaboration and innovation, the design prioritizes safety, serenity, and inspiration, connecting learners with nature, supporting wellbeing, and fostering growth while reflecting the school’s unique character.
