The temporary exhibition shows works, person and position of Gerrit Rietveld in relation to his contemporaries. Inspired by Rietveld’s great desire to develop social housing, the exhibition is entirely built with a housing element: the inner door. Using doors on trestles of different heights, the visitor is led through different themes in his work. Rietveld's work is recognisable by a grey background and a left-oriented positioning in space, his contemporaries by a white background and a right-oriented positioning. During the mandatory retracing of steps at the end of the exhibition (the room has no separate exit), the visitors see a partially different exhibition as they walk in the other direction: the backs of the doors withdraw Rietveld’s contemporaries from view, and are fitted with images that portray important themes from Rietveld’s time. Rietveld's work continues to be visible.
By means of an audio tour, several works are commented on by Rietveld himself. In a separate room in the museum, visitors can get to work on their own in an educational program based on three different themes from Rietveld’s work. Visitors can take pictures of themselves with the end result and directly post them on Flickr, the workmanship can then be exhibited in the space.
The virtually undamaged doors were donated to thrift stores after the exhibition.
