Casa Bontempo – light as an architectural structure
At Casa Bontempo, the lighting design acts as a structuring element of the architecture, reinforcing spatial fluidity and the integration between interior and exterior. The lighting strategy follows the project’s transparency and lightness, preserving the clarity of architectural planes while enhancing the presence of the surrounding landscape.
Indirect linear lighting, applied at the intersections of ceilings, walls, and slabs, establishes a continuous and diffuse base that expands spatial perception and ensures visual comfort. These lines of light define horizontal and vertical planes, organize the different levels of the residence, and create continuity between spaces.
Along vertical circulation, light follows the architecture and highlights movement as a central element. LED strips integrated into the steps emphasize the geometry of the staircase, provide safety, and eliminate glare, while linear lighting in the slabs visually connects the floors. This continuous system contributes to a clear spatial reading and intuitively guides movement.
In contrast to the diffuse lighting, track-mounted adjustable spotlights introduce flexibility and precision. These accent points highlight furniture, artworks, and specific architectural elements, creating layered lighting without compromising the overall cohesion of the space.
Materiality — expressed through the combination of wood, concrete, glass, and light surfaces — is enhanced by the balance between general and accent lighting. The lighting design interacts with these materials, emphasizing textures and reinforcing the connection between interior spaces and the natural surroundings.
By integrating with construction elements and the architectural design, the lighting project enhances both spatial and sensory experience. The result is a lighting approach that does not compete with the architecture, but reveals it, articulating technique, perception, and continuity in a cohesive and precise system.
