Located at some 3.000 meters altitude in the Swiss Alps, close to Verbier top station at Mont Fort, this project is truly off-grid.
There is no infrastructure, water needs to be collected from a natural spring higher up in the mountain side, open one to two month a year, and stored for the rest of the year. Electricity comes from an arrangement of integrated solar panels, batteries and a back-up generator, heat from a pellet heater.
The building sits on the same footprint as a previously existing building on the site, with a basement halfway set into the mountain side and the other half exposed. The concrete volume is designed as a base for the new building on top, partly offset and cantilevered on one side. Thus creating a sunny terrace on one side, a protected overhang on the other.
The dramatic setting has of course inspired the design, which also endeavours to showcase the magnificent view over the Alps with the large slanting glass facade cantilevered to provide a sensation of floating mid-air.
