The project was part of the Highway E18 Høvik – Frydenhaug. The aim of the Bridge Park was to turn the negative space under the existing highway bridge into a positive opportunity for the surrounding area of Strømsø and the city of Drammen. The rundown area under the bridge had led to a disconnection between neighbourhoods in the city. Through the Bridge Park project the area under the bridge was transformed into an attractive space for activity and important green connection for the surrounding area.
The bridge was refurbished with reflective cladding, creating an attractive and sheltered space for year-round activity. The park was designed with a diversity of elements to encourage active use of the park by a range of user groups, with focus on youth and children. Elements include a climbing wall, skate park and skate bowl, hockey field, stage and amphitheater, play and water features, seating and gathering area, as well as green spaces. The hard surfaces of the park follow the bridge’s form, connecting the park elements with a wide meandering pathway leading to the river.
Three art installations were a part of the project, the most dominating feature being the rounded white concrete rings that frame the trees within the park. The concept was to create a dialogue between the bridge and its surroundings. This dialogue is emphasized with a pipe feature which allow users to speak to one another.
The park has significantly contributed to the revitalization of the city, and has become a widely used public space. The park received the award of “Norway’s best public space” by the Norwegian government in 2008.
