The new Belfort-Montbéliard TGV Station located on the Rhine-Rhône LGV high-speed line is being built on a 60-hectare "shared site" in the heart of a new urban development spread over part of the municipalities of Meroux, Moval, Bourogne and Trévenans. The principal aim of the programme is to make the future TGV station a material link between the railway infrastructure and the local area at the same time as it optimises regional multimodal transport interfaces. The programme is designed to be environmentally friendly by optimising energy consumption using geothermal energy via a ground-coupled heat exchanger and heat pump delivering two-thirds of the heating/cooling requirement. Rainwater from roofs will be recovered for uses as yet to be fully defined (eg, watering), while runoff water will be channelled into the thalweg after passing through a sedimentation tank/grease trap. Watermeadows planted with macrophyte grasses will supplement wastewater treatment provision for long-term car parks.
