Future Simple Studio was invited to design a 35,000 sq.ft plaza in the Hangar District. Using the vocabulary of flight paths and airplane landing strips as our starting point, we derived a new ground pattern and canopy structure for community play. We also created a Playscape: a dynamic public installation of modular elements that can be reconfigured throughout the year to accommodate multiple activities.
The playscape is a new type of outdoor furniture made of modular pieces that can be reconfigured into different arrangements to accommodate the needs for various activities—benches for sitting, lounging, picnicking or tying your skates. A grid canopy sculpture is outrigged with different custom systems of attachment for swings, awnings, wind shields and hammocks. Together, these elements create a flexible outdoor place.
