BANK BY MORE
Acclaimed Shanghai-based Contemporary Art Gallery Re-opens Underground
MORE Architecture designed the new space for art gallery BANK in Shanghai’s Former French Concession. The proposal is a balancing act between being underground and being established. BANK re-opened last month during Shanghai Art Week 2016.
Contemporary art gallery BANK has set itself apart from the pack by going beyond the established gallery model. BANK hosts unconventional group shows, organizes performances, screenings, talks and other public programs.
Their - involuntary - move from Xianggang Road to Anfu Road confronted BANK with this notion of being part of the establishment; both in its business model, but also through the ‘upmarket’ location which Anfu Road is.
Their new space embodies this challenge: although in a smart neighborhood, the gallery is in a basement: literally underground. The design sees to hold the 'edge' of BANK by maintaining elements of the basement, coalescing them with the emblematic 'white cube' look & feel of a contemporary art gallery.
The BANK team was adamant in remaining some of the leftover qualities of the original, quickly abandoned basement space. The design process became a game of leaving and taking away, a collage of what was there to stay and what was to become new.
Designing the space, the architects had to work with the existing columns, which generated a layered perspective in the space. The architects emphasized this linearity in the lay-out of the ceiling, creating a coulisse landscape in which one can explore and discover art works and understand them from different perspectives.
This coulisse effect highlights the contrast between old and new, raw and fresh. Glamorous features, such as the glossy ultimately play with the new environment BANK finds itself in.
