Anchored at 512 S. Mangum Street and overlooking the Durham Bulls Athletic Park, Avalara's newly reimagined corporate headquarters marks the company's transition from a West Coast base to a national presence rooted in downtown Durham. Rather than starting fresh, the design team transformed an existing, well-loved office to rise to the occasion, embodying Avalara's signature ethos of less taxing, more relaxing while deepening the company's connection to the city it calls home.
The project spans three and a half floors, completed across two phases, and balances performance, hospitality, and culture without abandoning the efficiencies of the existing footprint.
Level 01 anchors the experience as a client-facing, hospitality-driven destination. At its heart is Avalara's iconic tiki bar, a beloved fixture from the company's career fair and industry event circuit, now permanently integrated into headquarters as a nod to the brand's entrepreneurial roots and approachable spirit. Adjacent, a flexible training room accommodates up to 120 people for onboarding sessions, client engagements, and company-wide gatherings.
Throughout the space, Avalara's signature orange energizes the palette and reinforces brand identity. The workplace standard was modernized with open workstations, sit-stand desks, upgraded lighting, refreshed finishes, and refinished concrete floors, a commitment to adaptive reuse that prioritizes both sustainability and longevity.
By investing in what already existed, Avalara preserved a valued location while transforming it into a space that reflects the company's growth, culture, and national ambitions.
