Atrium House in Ruda Śląska — Open to Nature
This project was developed for a relatively small yet exceptionally charming plot in Ruda Śląska. Despite limited buildable space (582 m² as defined by the local zoning plan), the site offered remarkable natural qualities — especially to the east, where it borders a forest.
Throughout the design process, we explored several concepts with the client — from a two-storey house with a flat roof to more compact layouts. Ultimately, we concluded that an atrium house would best meet the investor’s expectations, providing both intimacy and openness to the surrounding landscape.
The result is a single-storey home centered around a semi-open atrium — the heart of the house — connecting the interior living space with the private garden. The internal courtyard offers shelter and privacy while maintaining an open view toward the forest.
The functional program is distributed over two levels.
On the ground floor, the plan includes three main zones:
entry and technical area (garage, vestibule, wardrobe, utility room, WC, and pantry),
day zone with a spacious living room, dining area, and kitchen,
private zone with the master bedroom, walk-in closet, bathroom, and study.
These spaces are arranged around the atrium featuring a concrete terrace, pergola, wooden deck, and space for a potential outdoor pool. Vertical circulation is provided by a single-flight staircase enclosed between two walls, 1.1 m wide.
The upper floor accommodates two east-facing children’s bedrooms, a guest room, a laundry, and a bathroom — all with access to a covered terrace above the ground floor.
Due to the presence of mining subsidence in the area, the design required certain structural reinforcements. Thanks to close cooperation between the client, architect, and structural engineer, we managed to enhance the building’s resilience while preserving its original architectural concept.
