Tuira assisted living was realized on the basis of a winning open international architecture competition entry. The design is based on the surroundings and urban context since it is an infill. The typological hierarchy in the 1970´s modernist Tuira is based on two-story commercial/public buildings and residential buildings that are distinctly higher. Our program combined these two functions with assisted living units and restaurant services in the two-story base and more independent housing units in the tower. Scale of the Valtatie- street and surrounding buildings was taken into account, as well as colors and materials of the surrounding urban environment. Walled gardens cut into the base - providing a safe access and outdoor environment for the elderly - were a substantive part of the early concept phase.
