Austria Science Communication Center
A key objective of the architectural concept for the Austrian Science Communication Center is to open the building to its surroundings and strengthen its connection to the urban environment. The aim is to create a dynamic space where science is made visible, accessible, and engaging — bringing together the historic character of the building with a contemporary openness.
The design is guided by the question: How can science be communicated in a way that inspires curiosity and dialogue? The response is a flexible, modular spatial and exhibition system that enables openness, interaction, and participation — from spontaneous encounters to immersive experiences.
Two fundamental shapes define the spatial concept: the circle as a symbol of collectivity and reflection, and the line as a path of movement and connection. Together, they structure the visitor experience through circular thematic islands and linear pathways, clearly guiding orientation and exploration. This consistent spatial language integrates architecture, exhibition, and furnishing within the historic fabric of the building.
Workshop areas, open labs, and discussion zones support participation and exchange. Researchers work visibly within the space, while digital tools — such as AR tables and immersive VR — complement hands-on elements. A central axis, the “Line of Research,” connects two city streets and is anchored by a circular meeting point. Public areas like a café, a green atrium, and a kinetic sculpture activate the space as an accessible hub.
The renovation follows a sustainable and resource-conscious strategy, upgrading existing infrastructure where possible. By focusing on key areas like the entrance and courtyard, the concept achieves high design quality with modest interventions — proving that careful, targeted measures can have lasting impact.
