The look and feel of Taylor Place – Arizona State University’s newest and most ambitious residence hall in downtown Phoenix – is chic and contemporary, thanks in large part to Cambridge Architectural’s sophisticated stainless steel mesh accents. A metal fabric shading system uniquely dresses the outer surface of the building’s elevator shaft and the pedestrian bridges that link the two towers on each floor, and forms cubic steel projections on every odd-numbered floor to create shaded outdoor porch areas complete with lounge furniture.

The mesh system texturizes the building with urban flair during the day, and creates an artistic scene from the street view by allowing interior light to escape through the mesh at night.

Function

To match the range of services at Taylor Place – retail venues, a dining facility and a 4,000-square foot shade garden open to its 1,300 residents and the public – Cambridge’s architectural mesh system also performs various functions. The metal fabric panels act as vertical walls, facilitating solar shading on various levels. The panels also provide ventilation, scenic views, durability and safety for the mixed-use building.

Benefit

Cambridge built an architectural mesh exterior for Taylor Place with shading properties that make running the building more affordable. The mesh system blocks the sun, resulting in an energy-efficient facility with decreased cooling costs. Additionally, stainless steel architectural mesh is a material that is virtually indestructible, outlasting most other materials in durability and is 100% recyclable.

Finally, Cambridge’s metal fabric panels were specifically engineered to fit the contours of Taylor Place’s exterior using their patented Scroll™ attachment system, ensuring a successful and issue-free installation. It can contribute to solar heat gain reduction and does not mitigate views - all important considerations for high-performance buildings. In addition, the metal fabric shading system used in Taylor Place was engineered to hold up in extreme temperatures and to ultimately provide a long-lasting architectural solution. Cambridge Architectural is an active member of the USGBC®, and helps architects take maximum advantage of LEED credit through the many categories in which architectural mesh systems apply.
