"The Necessity of Attention and Strengthening Public Sphere in the Political and Social Context of Iran Today"
"Social democracy is realized through the development of the public sphere. The foundation of the public sphere is dialogue and interaction. The city and public space represent the tangible realization of the public sphere. A developed public sphere can be strengthened by public spaces and the enhancement of the quality of public spaces will contribute to the growth of the public sphere."
"The changes in contemporary political and social structures have brought about fundamental transformations in the public sphere. Since the mid-20th century, this issue has been a subject of study for philosophers and sociologists, and in recent years, it has been of significant importance in our country. The necessity of paying attention to it, studying its historical trajectory, identifying and explaining current conditions, and, on the other hand, predicting and presenting a vision for the future, are among the most important topics in the field of sociology."
"Considering that public spaces serve as vessels for the realization of the public sphere, a reevaluation and the presentation of new forms of public spaces are essential in response to changes in this domain. This calls for a critical examination of both aspects and the definition of the future outlook."
Project Definition
"In project planning, a collection of cultural and public functions with an area exceeding 3000 square meters is anticipated, while the allocated site has an area exceeding 44000 square meters. This implies a significant ratio between the potential architectural structure and the landscape. The dual nature of the building and landscape with a ratio of 1 to 9 is a key theme, directing the design focus towards the heavier portion, namely the landscape."
"In its ideal form, the landscape, through purposeful human-scale definition, the creation of modified environmental conditions, and the provision of facilities for public activities, can be transformed into a public space."
"On the other hand, defining urban signage is one of the project's objectives and requirements. The approach and response to this issue in a city like Hamadan, with its historical layers, multiple urban symbols, and a unique urban structure, is noteworthy. By studying different forms of urban signage in Hamadan, it seems that in order to create a new layer to the city and add value to the project, a different perspective on this concept will be essential."
Grand Strategy
Based on the above, two significant subjects, the public sphere and urban signage, have received serious attention, and they have been redefined critically, and new forms of each have been pursued.
Public Sphere:
"Land surface is typically defined as the foundation for architectural realization and public space. In pursuit of introducing a new type of public space, the concept of engaging with the land was examined. Options of subsiding into the ground and being elevated above the surface brought new capabilities."
"Subsiding into the ground results in the creation of void space in contrast to the architectural mass and form. On the other hand, it brings the potential for concealment and its discovery."
"The topography of the site and its sloping nature is another factor that influences the way it relates to the city. Subsiding into the ground enables a direct connection with the city's surface."
"Rising above the hill's surface, as another form of engagement with the city's land, redefines the city as a 'human-made nature,' enabling panoramic views and turning the city into a subject and object of its gaze. Panoramic views of the city romanticize the often bleak myth of urban living, allowing for an unparalleled and novel perception. Unlike regular sight that permits a superficial understanding of objects, bird's-eye view grasps the structure of objects. In this context, the city presents itself to the viewer for them to construct it with their mental capacity. While panoramic views of the city wrestle with the audience's knowledge, they also portray the city from the perspective of time and history."
"The site or hill, due to its elevated position relative to the city, possesses the quality of panoramic views. However, ascending from the peak of the hill further enhances this quality of vision."
Urban Signage:
"In the examination of Hamedan city, two structures draw attention: the radial structure of the city and the squares defined at the intersections of urban axes. Urban signage in Hamedan is mostly defined in these squares, and each of them possesses a form of public space in its vicinity or within itself. These urban signs are categorized in terms of content into historical, religious, and memorial types and in terms of structure, they are either standalone structures, monuments, or a combination of both. In all of these types, public space is attached to the urban element, and its content (historical, religious, or memorial) naturally limits the audience."
"The direct transformation of a public space into urban signage (and not just attaching a sign to a space) explicitly emphasizes its public nature. Creating a public space at an elevated height with the aim of redefining urban signage in an all-encompassing social form will generate a type of urban signage that, without dependence on layers such as history and religion, will solely make the public space the main subject of transformation into a sign."
"In the 'Confrontation' project, the understanding and interpretation of the city occur on two layers and at two different scales. One involves a scaled-down model of the city's structure hidden in the lower layer, while the other offers a panoramic view from above the hill's surface to the city's structure on a real scale. In the juxtaposition of the two layers, the interplay that unfolds results in a game of uncovering the relationship between the 'hidden concept of the city' in these two layers."
