In the city of Kermanshah, a young couple embarked on the journey of building a home. Their lifestyle, clarity of aspirations, idealism, and forward-looking perspective set the intellectual framework of the project. The site—an infill parcel of 280 square meters, located on a cul-de-sac within the fabric of the old city—was defined by its southern orientation, narrow proportions (12.5 by 22.5 meters), and the regulation of 60% coverage across three floors. The surrounding urban tissue lacked visual and spatial qualities, discouraging any desire for outward engagement. For the clients, the house was to become a metaphor of their inner world—a spatial embodiment of inwardness.
The first gesture in constructing this inner cosmos was to design an introverted and autonomous architecture: a space in which light, views, diversity, and vitality would emerge entirely from the interior organization. A box-like typology, resonant with the morphology of urban infill parcels, provided the formal framework. Within this framework, a nine-part structural order was established.
Primary living spaces—such as the sitting room and bedrooms—were placed along the northern and southern bands; the western band accommodated services and vertical circulation (staircase and elevator); and the eastern band unfolded as terraces and semi-open thresholds. Public functions were positioned on the lower level, semi-public on the middle tier, and private domains on the upper floors.
At the heart of the structure, a central void—sculpted through subtraction—became the spatial core. Vertical and horizontal perforations allowed daylight to penetrate deep into the mass, generating a choreography of light that imbued the interior with temporal and atmospheric variation. Here, architecture moved beyond functional clarity to embrace spatial fluidity.
The spatial elements gathered around this central void, interlaced by staircases that transcended their purely connective role to become sculptural agents of continuity. Subtracted volumes not only introduced porosity and visual openness within the rigid shell, but also orchestrated multiple orientations of light, rendering the interior spaces time-sensitive—spaces that shift in mood and character with the passing of hours and seasons.
These voids, as organizational devices, wove together the dispersed programs into a cohesive whole. Through the interplay of solid and void, inside and outside, and the sequencing of movement and vision, a dynamic and heterogeneous order was formed. The interweaving of built and unbuilt—whether in the green passage connecting the living room to the northern bedroom, the southern terrace of the library, or the northern terrace adjoining the kitchen—produced an adventurous interior world: cohesive yet plural, autonomous yet interconnected.
The architectural strategy positioned every interior domain in direct dialogue with a semi-open counterpart, creating an extroverted encounter with the sky while preserving introverted privacy. Subtraction, penetration, and the central void thus emerged as the primary tools for generating coherence, multiplicity, and vitality. They elevated the spatial experience of the dwelling into one of transparency, fluidity, and continuity. Ultimately, the house negotiates the tension between three dualities—solid/void, open/closed, inside/outside—seeking to reconcile a dense and dynamic inner life with the silent, monolithic expression of the exterior.
Through its spatial sequences, the house offers a dynamic narrative of movement and pause. The reciprocity of full and empty, private and collective, inside and outside produces a fluid continuum. Skylights and cross-floor visual connections amplify transparency and unity, while the restrained openings on the façades emphasize inwardness and intensify the focus on the inner cosmos of the dwelling.
The design process began in the winter of 2019, and construction was completed in the summer of 2025.
