Alter draws from the communal nature of Nordic sauna culture and the slower, more contemplative qualities of Japanese bathing rituals to create a grounded and accessible approach to contrast therapy. Warm woods, natural finishes, and shifting light conditions shape a series of calm, immersive spaces that balance social gathering with quieter moments of retreat. Rather than framing wellness through intensity or spectacle, the project focuses on atmosphere, ritual, and a sense of openness throughout.
In the shower area, a recessed oculus introduces soft, omnipresent light from above, washing the area in an even ambient glow. A central sculptural column rises below the opening, wrapped in green porcelain tile to evoke the feeling of showering among the trees. Wooden bathing buckets and rope detailing reference traditional bathing rituals while adding tactility.
Movement throughout Alter unfolds through a gradual transition from light into shadow and back again across a sequence of sauna, cold plunge, shower, and lounge settings. At the far corner of the interior, two shared cold plunge baths echo the communal qualities of Japanese onsens. Partially screened by timber slats, the baths are animated by diffused daylight that filters deep into the space and shifts in tone throughout the day, connecting the passing of time to the space.
