For this commercial interior in Shanghai created for the Australian legacy mattress brand A.H. Beard, FarNear Design has designed a subtly lit environment defined by a series of gently curved illuminated partitions which lead customers through the space. Indigo silk and off-white wool form subtle gradients which draw the eye on one side of the partitions, contrasting with the opposite side of glowing forms of stretched fabric which recall the plush, warm comfort of the mattresses themselves. Accents of natural timber, stone, and fabric under a dark blue ceiling completes an elegant and heightened atmosphere, evoking the feeling of a poetic night under the stars.
Designer Jai Huainan has taken the ethos of the brand and refined it into an aesthetic which creates a new kind of representation, an immersive experience rich in visual detail and nuance. The entrance to the store invites visitors inside via curved surfaces of glass and polished stone - once inside, they find themselves in a large showroom of dramatic light and shadow. FarNear’s design proposes the concept of a ‘curatorial’ retail space, where natural materials, art, products, and social interaction are all brought together to form an integrated spatial experience which can better reflect the actual use of the products on display.
The space’s proportions are rather narrow and long, so the design has employed the curved form of the partitions to trace easy lines of circulation through and around its length and the mattresses on display. The partitions themselves are made from the same natural fiber which is used in the handmade mattresses, soft to the touch and providing an acoustically absorbent material to the store, furthering the atmosphere of calm and restfulness. The walls throughout are clad in a similar fabric with a gradient pattern, subtly bridging the earth tones of the floor with the night-sky blue above.
