Pípal Workshop Gallery is the transformation of a historic painter’s workshop in Humpolec into a gallery, wine bar, community venue and small wellness, set within a family-owned ensemble that has grown over more than 150 years.
The project was designed as a multi-generational collaboration led by architect Dan Merta of MA Studio, together with members of the Merta family.
The main building—originally a craft workshop—now opens from the street into a generous gallery hall with exposed trusses, a mezzanine level and an industrial lighting system. A recycled steel bar, salvaged from Prague’s Point Gallery, forms a strong technical anchor within the interior.
From the gallery, large doors lead into an intimate courtyard paved with granite and covered with climbing vines, functioning as an outdoor living room and the central connector of the two buildings. A staircase then descends to a quiet garden terrace at the rear of the site.
The layout divides the building into a public front zone and a more intimate rear wellness area, inserted as a steel-and-timber structure and complemented by restored original terrazzo floors. The second building—serving the family—will be expanded with guest accommodation in a future phase.
A unified KNX smart system controls heating, security and precise gallery lighting.
The conversion combines restoration, recycled elements and new technical details to create a contemporary cultural space that remains deeply rooted in its history and family identity.
