The new “Luisa Basso” Early Childhood Education Centre in Longare was conceived as a place for growth and discovery, where architecture and pedagogy naturally come together to create a calm, welcoming, and easily recognizable environment for children and the people who
accompany them every day. Designed to accommodate both a nursery and a kindergarten, the complex is organized into two distinct yet seamlessly connected functions, unified beneath a single pitched roof that serves as both a defining architectural feature and a unifying gesture.
The two independent entrances are designed as projecting volumes that extend beyond the main façade, making them immediately identifiable upon arrival. The generous roof creates both visual and spatial continuity throughout the building. Its sloping planes extend beyond the perimeter, forming deep cantilevered overhangs: on the east side they shelter the entrance portico, providing a welcoming space for gathering and waiting, while on the west side they stretch towards the garden, creating a covered outdoor area for educational and recreational activities. This design makes the relationship between indoors and outdoors an integral part of everyday life, allowing children to play, explore, and experience nature throughout the year in a continuous dialogue between interior and exterior spaces.
The project, funded through Italy's National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) with a total investment of €2.46 million, stands out for its strong focus on the child's scale and on the pedagogical quality of its spaces. Each classroom is conceived as a small, autonomous environment, equipped with integrated facilities and flexible layouts while remaining fully visible and easily supervised by educators. The circular windows that punctuate the façades introduce a playful and distinctive architectural language, acting as small "eyes" opening onto the outside world and encouraging curiosity, imagination, and interaction.
A pastel colour palette creates a warm and reassuring atmosphere, enhanced by the abundant natural light that fills every room. Particular attention has also been given to environmental sustainability and energy efficiency. The building has been designed according to NZEB (Nearly Zero Energy Building) standards and incorporates next-generation building systems that ensure continuous microclimate control while minimizing energy consumption. Its high-performance envelope, together with carefully designed natural daylighting and ventilation strategies, provides year-round comfort, well-being, and energy efficiency.
The result is a simple yet expressive architecture that successfully combines functionality with a strong identity. Through its clear composition and careful attention to detail, the new Early Childhood Education Centre becomes an open, inclusive, flexible, and contemporary learning
environment, designed to support children's development through light, colour, and space.
