Selldorf Architects, located at Manhattan’s Union Square, has acquired an international reputation for work that is sensitive to context and program, thoughtful in execution, and timeless. Established by Annabelle Selldorf in 1988, the firm has worked on public and private projects that range from museums and libraries to a recycling facility; and at scales from the construction of new buildings to the restoration of historic interiors and exhibition design. Their design approach engages a critical process that eliminates the unnecessary and proposes clear, succinct solutions in which all elements—from broad concept to fine detail—coexist in a carefully considered balance. The firm has particular expertise in the specific demands of cultural and art-related projects, with significant experience in gallery, exhibition, and studio spaces; as well as museums, art foundations, and collectors’ homes.
Clients include cultural institutions and universities such as the Neue Galerie New York, Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute, Brown University, and New York University’s Institute for the Study of the Ancient World. In addition, the firm has designed galleries for David Zwirner, Hauser & Wirth, and Gladstone Gallery among others. Other recent work includes several new condominiums in New York City; a 30,000 sf LEED Gold gallery building for David Zwirner; and the Sunset Park Materials Recycling Facility, a recycling and education center on the Brooklyn waterfront.
