"The City Map Project", "The History of Gardens" and "The Idea of a House" are sets of photo-collages created with the computer from my own photographs.
"The City Map Project" is about individual mapping and knowledge of a city. In my case, the city is New York City, but the experience I am interested in is a universal, personal sense of place, wherever that may be. It is both a physical place and a psychological one.
The imagery is of markings on the streets, walls
and sidewalks of Manhattan. There are occasional additions of details of my own paintings, scans of antique postcards or a rare image of a place other than Manhattan.
The set "The City Map Project Munich" was created with images of the streets and surfaces of that city.
In “The City Map Project” the images are an alternative to field notes kept by explorers. They document a particular experience and also strengthen the memory of it. The photo-collages, with their interconnected images, reflect the
interior map I have made of my personal
experience walking through the city. Through this
process of arranging random components, I am
able to discover connections.
