"The City Map Project" is a series of digital photo-collages created with the computer from my own photographs.
The work is about individual mapping and knowledge of a city. In my case, the city is New York City, but the experience I am interested in is a universal, personal sense of place, wherever that may be. It is both a physical place and a psychological one.
The imagery is of markings on the streets, walls and sidewalks of Manhattan. There are occasional additions of details of my own paintings, scans of antique postcards or a rare image of a place other than Manhattan.
In “The City Map Project” the images are an alternative to field notes kept by explorers. They document a particular experience and also strenthen the memory of it. The photo-collages, with their interconnected images, reflect the interior map I have made of my personal experience walking through the city. Through this process of arranging random components, I am able to discover connections.
The photo-collages are available as Limited Edition Archival Inkjet Prints.
Print sizes are variable up to 8' high.
