Halloween Parade: 14 Design Finds in Orange and Black

Sheila Kim Sheila Kim

In honor of a certain holiday this week, we present this roundup of some favorite recent products that wear Halloween colors well — from lighting and flooring to tile and textiles and, even, furniture by architect David Adjaye.

ABK

ABK: Interno 9
Resembling industrial oxidized metal, Interno 9 is actually a rectified porcelain tile that looks particularly striking in the Dark colorway whether in a commercial or residential setting. It comes in large formats of 24 by 47 inches (60 by 120 centimeters), nine inches squared (60 centimeters squared), or 12 by 47 inches (30 by 120 centimeters). You can also specify in Mud, Silver, Rust, or the lighter hues of Dune and Pearl (which have more of a cement look).

Grupo B.Lux

Grupo B.Lux: Aspen
A striated black ring connects the top and bottom portions of this luminaire’s matte-lacquered aluminum shade. The mango-and-gray colorway is offered in both pendant and floor lamp models. Aspen is available in the United States via Global Lighting.

Baresque

Baresque: Zintra
A cost-effective acoustic solution, Zintra panels are produced in 110-inch-long sheets that deliver an NRC of 0.35 to 0.90 depending upon the other parameters of the space. The Class A fire-rated product comes in a wide range of colors, can easily be trimmed with a carpet knife, and can be installed on walls, ceilings, and other elements.

Bernhardt Design

Bernhardt Design: Colours
Colours is a fun modular upholstered bench series whose 12 varied, organic shapes recall stepping stones. They can be grouped together, spaced apart, or used as standalone units in a range of settings from office and hotel lobbies to schools. The pieces can be upholstered in any of Bernhardt Textiles’ fabric or leather offerings.

Ceramica Sant’Agostino

Ceramica Sant’Agostino: Flexible Architecture
Philippe Starck designed this tile collection to become an integral part of architecture by exaggerating joint lines that, in turn, enable the designer or homeowner to create his or her own floor or wall grid. Each 12-millimeter-thick tile comes in a non-bordered version; with an eight-millimeter-thick recessed faux-grout border on one, two, or all four sides; or as an eight-millimeter-thick unit entirely faced in the faux-grout texture.

Davis Furniture

Davis Furniture: Tre Bench
Designed by Jehs+Laub, the Tre furniture family has just grown with the addition of a bench. Perfect for lounge spaces, the bench is constructed of three identical pieces of molded plywood that come together at the seat’s center. The wood can be finished in natural, medium, gray, or brown oak, while the optional seat pad is available in a range of neutral or eye-catching colors on one, two, or all three sections of the bench.

Designtex

Designtex: Beguiled by the Wild
Part of the Charley Harper Collection for Designtex, this healthcare upholstery fabric borrows from the American modernist artist’s highly stylized wildlife and nature illustrations. The textile is composed of polyurethane with a Cleangene and silicone finish, has a 10-inch-square repeat, and comes in 14 colorways, including these orangey palettes.

FILD

FILD: Lines Decorative Light
The Lines collection plays on geometry with volumetric forms that are dictated by the shape of each luminaire’s ceiling plate and base. The steel “cages” measure 150 millimeters squared (square version); 150 by 80 millimeters (triangular); or 150 by 185 millimeters (hexagonal); all are offered in heights of 800, 1,400, or 2,000 millimeters and in black, white, gray, yellow, navy, coral, or mint colors.

Fireclay Tile

Fireclay Tile: Various in Tangerine
In addition to standard subway and mosaic tile formats, Fireclay’s Tangerine palette is offered in specialty shapes including Cravate (houndstooth), Mini Star and Cross, Ogee Drop (akin to gingko leaf shape), and Paseo, among others.

Knoll

Knoll: Washington Collection
David Adjaye’s furniture collection for Knoll consists of a few stunners in black, including the Prism lounge chair, ottoman, and side table, which were added this year, and, appropriate for Halloween, the Skeleton aluminum side chair that he unveiled back in 2013. The Prism series is also offered in white and red with any of four neutral upholstery fabrics, while the Skeleton chair also comes in gray, green, white, copper, and nickel.

Pablo

Pablo: Swell
Sporting a Hershey’s Kiss shape, Swell is a handcrafted light pendant featuring a spun aluminum (97 percent of which is recyclable) that’s been finished in brass on the interior and matte black, matte white, or brass on the exterior. It takes E26 PAR LED lamping. Three sizes are offered.

reSAWN Timber

reSAWN Timber: Charred Wood
Shou sugi ban is applied to cypress, black walnut, red oak, or reclaimed hemlock to create this cladding product. In addition to natural tones, Charred Wood comes in 18 saturated hues such as bright orange and a range of deep blacks.

Unika Vaev

Unika Vaev: Ecoustic
As the name might hint, these wall panels are designed to reduce noise — with style. Ecoustic units are available in four thicknesses and can absorb anywhere from 30 to 95 percent of sound depending on panel thickness, installation, and other space parameters. (When installed with an air gap, the absorption levels are higher.)

41zero42

41zero42: Signs
Six different micro-patterns appear as subtle raised reliefs on these tiles. Shade and caliber variations are applied to give each a vintage look and feel. The six-by-nine-inch units come in white, gray, and mud in addition to the black (also shown at top).

The Art of Architectural Graffiti, According to Instagram

Graffiti is a word weighed down by negative connotations, primarily due to its inherently illicit na ture.
