Zaha Hadid Architects are a global force; the office’s late founder is remembered as a trailblazing designer who transformed the bounds of architectural design. For those curious about the investigative process behind their dynamic, fluid and seemingly boundless designs, a new exhibition will explore a variety of project documentation tools — from technical drawings and diagrams, computer-generated visualizations, and architectural models, to video projections and virtual reality experiences.

The best part? The flagship exhibition “Zaha Hadid Architects: Vertical Urbanism,” on display at the Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI) Gallery from now until 3 April 2022, will also be accessible as a virtual exhibition to architectural enthusiasts around the globe.

Presented in partnership with the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (IVE), invites digital visitors to explore ZHA’s formative projects and to consider ZHA’s design response to public space in dense urban conditions and their ongoing drive to establish a continuous, active ground-plane.

The digital exhibition takes a three-pronged approach to exploring the theme of innovation and the investigative spirit undergirding the practice: first, through a close look at the studio’s boundary-breaking approach to 21st century tower designs (“vertical urban architecture”); next, by detailing the ongoing research of ZHA’s Computation & Design research group (ZHA CODE); and, finally, by showcasing ZHA’s seminal local projects such as the Morpheus Hotel at City of Dreams Macau, as well as the The Henderson tower to be completed in central Hong Kong.

The online format does not preclude close examination: online visitors are able to zoom into visual details of architectural models, and experience multimedia elements from the comfort of their homes. From here, visitors can learn more about ZHA CODE’s collaborations with the world’s leading scientific institutions in their quest to to integrate robotics, artificial intelligence and digital fabrication with design processes.

The role of local supply chains, materials, craftsmanship and manufacturing, are also highlighted; a refreshing reminder of the necessary importance of logistical expertise in executing award-winning design.  Likewise, the relationship between new construction technologies and sustainability is also considered.
